Motivational Incentives in Addiction Treatment

Implementing incentives to bring about behavioral change have been tools used by a multitude of professionals throughout history. If understood and used appropriately it can be a way of improving problematic behaviors while the individual progresses and ultimately finds naturally occurring reinforcers. Despite some misconceptions within addictions and co-occurring treatment, it remains one of the easiest ways to reward positive behaviors, and the most cost effective.

Objectives

  1. Describe the history and background of motivational Incentives
  2. Identify the seven principles of motivational incentives
  3. Name positive outcomes and benefits of using motivational incentives to change behavior
  4. Descirbe the utlilization of incentives to change behavior
